A microneedle patch that could be used for at-home testing of skin cancer has been validated in mice by Michigan Engineering researchers. Led by Sunitha Nagrath, professor of chemical engineering, it is meant to be an alternative for current testing, which requires a trip to a clinic/hospital for blood sample testing or biopsy. The patch pushes into the first layer of skin to collect interstitial fluid and is then applied to test strips to detect cancer indicators in 15 minutes or less. Initial tests on mice skin samples have proved successful, with the research team in talks with a company to begin clinical trials in the near future.
