On September 15th, the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center hosted an informational webinar about the HEAL National K12 Clinical Pain Career Development Award (HEAL K12). The session offered valuable insights for early-career clinician scientists interested in expanding their expertise in clinical pain research.
Key Topics Covered:
Program Overview:
The HEAL K12 is a mentored career development program aimed at supporting clinician scientists interested in clinical pain research. It provides substantial resources—including protected time—for scholars to focus on research and training.
Funding Details:
Awardees may receive up to $100,000 per year in salary support, up to $32,000 in fringe benefits, $2,500 for travel, and $50,000 in research support per year, for up to three years (maximum total request: $199,260).
Eligibility Criteria:
The program is intended for early-career scholars who may not yet be ready for independent awards like K- or R-series grants, or who have institutional or mentorship limitations that affect their competitiveness for other career development awards.
Mentored Career Development Structure:
Scholars will be matched with both a home-institution mentor and a national senior pain researcher, as well as mentors with lived pain experience. Scholars will conduct training primarily at their home institution and are expected to dedicate at least 75% of their effort to the program.
Application Process:
Guidance was provided on eligibility, application steps, and how to put together a compelling application.
Q&A Session:
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, addressing attendee questions about program details, eligibility, and the application process.
This webinar is a valuable resource for clinician scientists seeking a strong foundation and mentorship in clinical pain research. The HEAL K12 program is designed to bridge gaps and foster the development of future leaders in the field.
